Even if the fire-front is hundreds of metres away from your house burning embers carried by strong winds can easily ignite dead leaves and vegetation on your roof. Once this happens the fire can quickly spread under the eaves and into the roof cavity at which point the fire can take hold of your house within seconds with catastrophic results.
